Service Description

A Child in Custody – Rights, Realities & Safeguarding Overview This training provides professionals with a clear understanding of the rights, responsibilities, and safeguarding considerations when working with children in police custody. It is designed for youth workers, social workers, appropriate adults, safeguarding leads, youth justice practitioners, and others supporting young people in contact with the criminal justice system. The course explores the UK legal framework, outlining what happens from arrest through to detention, interview, and release. Participants will learn about the rights of children in custody, including access to legal advice, the role of the appropriate adult, and legal time limits on detention. A strong focus is placed on safeguarding. Participants will learn to recognise vulnerability, respond to risk, and understand factors such as trauma, social disadvantage, and developmental needs. The training also examines disproportionality within the youth justice system and its impact on outcomes for young people. Through case studies and practical guidance, participants will build confidence in advocating for children in custody and navigating complex situations safely and effectively. Learning Outcomes By the end of the training, participants will be able to: - Explain the UK legal framework for children in police custody - Identify key rights, including legal advice and appropriate adult support - Describe each stage of the custody process - Recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns - Understand the role of the Appropriate Adult - Identify legal time limits and detention rules - Recognise factors that increase vulnerability - Understand disproportionality in the youth justice system - Apply learning to real-world scenarios - Use practical tools to support safe, informed practice - Identify preventative approaches to reduce reoffending - Reflect on their role in safeguarding and advocacy Facilitator The session is delivered by an experienced psychosocial practitioner with over a decade of frontline work supporting vulnerable children and young people. With a strong academic background in psychology and psychosocial intervention, they combine evidence-based knowledge with extensive real-world experience. Having worked across diverse communities, including London and the Midlands, they bring a deep understanding of the challenges faced by both young people and the professionals who support them.
