Service Description

Taster Session: Conversations that Matter – Why Difficult Conversations Are Hard (and What Helps) Overview This interactive taster session introduces the Therapeutic Resource Platform and its practical tools for navigating difficult conversations with greater confidence and clarity. It is designed for professionals working with young people, young adults, and vulnerable individuals across social, educational, and community settings. The platform brings together psychological insights, communication models, and practical resources, translating concepts from neuroscience and psychology into clear, usable tools for everyday practice. Participants will explore why conversations become challenging, including the impact of emotional responses, stress, and behaviour. The session introduces simple frameworks to help explain reactions such as anger, withdrawal, and resistance during difficult interactions. A live demonstration of the platform will showcase tools that support more effective, intentional communication. Participants will gain practical strategies to improve conversation quality, build rapport, and support more open engagement from service users. The session also provides space for reflection and discussion, allowing professionals to share experiences and explore common challenges. It offers a preview of the full programme, Conversations that Matter – Key Skills for Difficult Dialogues. Learning Outcomes By the end of the session, participants will be able to: - Understand why difficult conversations occur - Recognise the impact of stress responses on communication - Apply simple frameworks to navigate challenging interactions - Use practical techniques to improve conversation quality - Build rapport and trust with service users - Understand how tools can support more effective engagement - Reflect on challenges within their professional context - Gain insight into the full training programme Facilitator The session is delivered by an experienced psychosocial practitioner with over a decade of frontline work supporting vulnerable children and young people. With a strong academic background in psychology and psychosocial intervention, they combine evidence-based knowledge with extensive real-world experience. Having worked across diverse communities, including London and the Midlands, they bring a deep understanding of the challenges faced by both young people and the professionals who support them. Their approach bridges theory and practice.
